Harris Debate 2024 – Ethics in the Age of AI: Impact on Valuation Practices

Online

Overview

The CPD Foundation Harris Debate was established by RICS to recognise Jonathan Harris’ unique contribution to CPD, further education and lifelong learning. Each subject revolves around the theme of ethics and the debates are all chaired by Lord Bichard of Nailsworth KCB. Jonathan Harris CBE FRICS joined the RICS at the age of 17 and rose through the ranks to become its President in 2000/2001.

The debate this year explores the ethics of AI in surveying and valuation, which is a critical topic as AI's role expands. Automated Valuation Models (AVMs) are increasingly used by banks for efficient, cost-effective property valuations, reducing the need for some physical inspections. While AVMs offer benefits like speed and consistency, they raise ethical concerns regarding accuracy, reliability, and data quality. They also pose potential risks, such as reduced transparency for buyers and accountability for errors. Addressing these ethical challenges is crucial, and this debate provides the opportunity to hear from a range of experts and thought leaders in this field, and to navigate how to maintain best practices.

Registration will kick off from 18:00, with the debate starting at 18:30 in the Lecture Hall at London HQ. We will also be hosting a drinks reception after the event from 20:00-21:00.
