One of our key strategic goals is to lead and influence on sustainability. Our focuses are to help decarbonise the built environment, build climate resilience, promote and protect biodiversity, and embed circular economy principles.

RICS is working with members and key stakeholders across the natural and built environment to strengthen guidance and standards for measuring and reporting carbon, advocate for positive change, provide guidance, training and support, and leverage data and technology.

RICS at COP29

From 18-22 November, RICS participated at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) as a UN-accredited observer organisation to lead and influence critical discussions on sustainability.

At COP29, we represented the profession and our members, highlighting the important role we all play in driving positive change. Along with this, a crucial goal for us was to strengthen our relationships with decision makers and government representatives, advocating the importance for global harmonisation of whole life carbon measurement. Read more about our participation at COP29.

Sustainability standards and guidance

RICS are focused on enabling change to address the role the built and natural environment play in emitting carbon emissions, as well as build climate resilience, protect biodiversity and embed circular economy principles. We have world leading standards – and as a regulated body our members follow and use these globally.

RICS whole life carbon assessment (WLCA) standard, 2nd edition

Measure whole-life carbon emissions, manage carbon budgets, reduce life cycle emissions and deliver a net-zero future for the built environment by adopting the RICS whole life carbon assessment (WLCA) standard, 2nd edition.

Working with the industry

We’re at the forefront of collaborating with key industry stakeholders across both the natural and built environment to lead the charge and increase innovation in reducing our collective carbon footprint, embedding circularity principles, creating resilient assets, and protecting biodiversity.
