The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has appointed Amanda Clack FRICS as the Chair of its Dispute Resolution Appointments Board (DRAB).

DRAB operates with delegated responsibilities to support the Standards and Regulation Board (SRB)’s role within the wider organisation to ensure that the regulatory function remains independent and demonstrates a clear commitment to upholding the public interest.

DRAB is supported by RICS staff working within the RICS Dispute Resolution Service (DRS), responsible for providing conflict avoidance and dispute resolution services throughout the world.

“I am excited to take on this role and to establish a strong board to provide oversight across the RICS Dispute Resolution Services (DRS). With the increasing pressures on the built environment to deliver more from construction, land and real estate there has never been a more poignant time for the DRS to be at the forefront internationally in acting as an independent catalyst to conflict avoidance and dispute resolution.”

Amanda Clack FRICS

A chartered quantity surveyor and chartered civil engineer with nearly 40 years’ experience in the built environment sector, Amanda is a senior property professional operating across real estate, infrastructure and construction. She served as RICS President in 2016-2017 and is the current Chair of Trustees at University College of Estate Management, as well as member of the Mayor of London’s Infrastructure Advisory Panel. Amanda was also an expert adviser to the UK government on building fire safety, following the Grenfell fire in 2017.

“I look forward to working with Amanda and the Board to continue providing assurance to the profession, public and stakeholders, and ensuring the highest standards of dispute resolution are met.”

Nigel Clarke

SRB Chair

Acting under powers delegated by the SRB, the role of DRAB is to:

  • act as the ultimate decision-maker in the investigation and escalation of complaints raised against dispute resolvers and others appointed by DRS
  • monitor and provide DRS with counsel and advice on how best to carry out its work to:
    • define and maintain the criteria and processes for inclusion on, and exclusion from DRS panels of dispute resolvers and expert witnesses globally
    • ensure appointments of dispute resolvers and expert witnesses made by and/or on behalf of RICS are made efficiently and to agreed performance standards
    • monitor complaints against DRS or appointed dispute resolvers; and oversee that the DRS complaints procedures are applied efficiently and appropriately.

Recruitment for DRAB members is currently at its final stages, and we expect to announce the full Board later this year.
