Dame Judith Hackitt today published the final report into the independent review of building regulations and fire safety, which addresses the need for regulatory change, and proposes solutions to the gaps in UK building regulations.

Making sure buildings are safe for all who live and work in them is absolutely essential and so we welcome publication of Dame Judith Hackitt’s final report into the independent review of building regulations and fire safety.

As the global professional body that sets and enforces standards across land, property and construction sectors, RICS stands ready to support and fulfil our public interest duty in what must be a once in a generation step change in the way the UK delivers and manages buildings.

Since the findings of the interim report, we have moved quickly to introduce a number of initiatives to encourage and support improved fire regulation standards, including establishing the International Fire Safety Standards (IFSS) Coalition which will provide greater consistency of fire safety standards across the world in the public interest.

We are currently reviewing the conclusions of the final report including any ‘shortcomings’, challenges and areas for change identified, and we will address these as a priority, working with the government and wider industry to ensure the buildings we live and work in are safe and the regulatory system for designing, constructing and managing buildings is sufficient and robust.

IFSS Coalition

At present, the many contrasting fire safety standards across the world have created uncertainty and confusion in the testing and approval of construction methods, products and operation of buildings.

Each of the International Fire Safety Standards (IFSS) coalition organisations has signed a declaration of support and commitment to promote and implement IFSS, and to encourage world markets to accept and adopt them. It is establishing a standard-setting committee dedicated to realising shared and international fire safety standards.
