The RICS Impact Report 2024 has been published, providing a comprehensive overview of our influence, advocacy and thought leadership activity across the UK.

This work has been enabled and informed by the expertise of RICS members and provides solutions and insight to policymakers, industry and consumers – ensuring RICS delivers in the public interest whilst demonstrating the importance the surveying profession has in responding to some of the biggest challenges facing the built and natural environment.

Key Highlights

Advocacy and Thought Leadership

Sustainability and Decarbonisation:

  • Promoting carbon assessment and retrofitting strategies to policymakers and global leaders. We are supporting the creation of GB Energy and a modern renewable energy industry in the UK whilst ensuring we create low-carbon, energy-efficient buildings.

Housing and Planning:

  • Shaping for housing reforms, including affordability and supply, planning frameworks, decarbonisation, quality standards and reforms for leaseholders and renters.

Building Safety:

  • Supported and influenced building safety policies including RAAC, cladding remediation and building control. We are working with governments across the UK as they review the findings of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry and implement reforms, so we don’t see another repeat of the tragedy.

Infrastructure and Major Projects:

Skills Development:

  • Successfully pushed for additional built environment education investment in devolved nations and are working with MPs and the UK Government to unlock opportunities and inspire the next generation of surveyors into the profession.

Across the UK

  • England: Engaged with local authorities, Metro Mayors and combined authorities on decarbonisation, regional retrofit programmes and skills initiatives.
  • Wales: Secured new built environment degrees and apprenticeships through the government and advised on decarbonisation policies by partnering with the new Welsh Zero Carbon Hwb.
  • Scotland: Led discussions on retrofit challenges, EPC reforms, and land use policy.
  • Northern Ireland: Worked with the Executive on housing, sustainability, and procurement conflict resolution.
