RICS has developed a blended learning programme tailored for construction industry and legal professionals working in South and sub-Saharan Africa.

The use of adjudication is growing rapidly in South Africa and the need for South African adjudicators to operate at internationally recognised standards of competence has never been higher. As the South African construction sector reaches further into Africa – where access to courts and other forms of dispute resolution is limited, there is a need for highly qualified South African adjudicators with an internationally recognised accreditation.

Who is the Diploma for?

The RICS Diploma is focused on the South African market but exposes students to the wider international field of adjudication as it is practised around the world.

Why learn with RICS?

RICS is the largest Adjudicator Nomination Authority in the world, making nearly 2000 appointments of adjudicators per annum internationally. 70% of the United Kingdom adjudicator nominations are currently made by RICS; which also acts as an Adjudicator Nomination Authority in all the Australian States and New Zealand. RICS is currently involved in the roll-out of adjudication in Canada.

What will you receive at the end of the course?

The Diploma provides practical training with an emphasis on developing professional competencies in:

  • How you run the adjudication process in practice
  • How you write a competent, enforceable and professional decision

Upon successful completion of the Diploma, you will be awarded the RICS Diploma in Adjudication (South Africa). This diploma will also be one of the criteria for the RICS Panel in South Africa when this is developed.

You will develop a clear understanding of the origin and development of, and the legal principles underlying, modern adjudication practice in the construction industry.

This module will cover the law of obligations to enable you to understand the nature of law and its place in society, as well as understand how the South African law of contract, delict and evidence is relevant to the practice of adjudication.

You will study the adjudication provisions in the major standard form contracts used in the SA Construction Industry, including JBCC, FIDIC, NEC to evaluate and understand the differences between them and most appropriate applicability of each.

You will develop a detailed practical understanding of how to plan, commence and run an effective adjudication process in the construction industry.

This practical module provides you with an understanding of the factors that should be considered in arriving at an enforceable Adjudication Decision and the skills you need to produce an enforceable, comprehensive and well-reasoned Adjudication Decision.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent undertaking the RICS Diploma in Adjudication. I studied alongside an interesting group of people from across the construction and engineering industry in Southern Africa, with a broad range of skills, experience and sector focus. Our tutors brought a wealth of first-hand experience from South African and international adjudication, sharing valuable guidance on what to expect when playing the role of an adjudicator and practical hints and tips on how to approach some of the challenges adjudicators face. I would recommend the course to anyone who is interested in becoming an adjudicator or learning more about how adjudication is developing in this part of the world.”
