Overview
Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a form of urban development that aims to increase the amount of residential, business and leisure space within walking distance of public transport. The objective of TOD essentially, is to increase the use of public transport and reduce the use of private cars, thus promoting sustainable urban growth.
TOD as a concept, first appeared in the late 1980s and has increasingly gained momentum, seeing numerous cities and regions across the globe implementing the concept into their urban development plans. Success of a TOD is dependant on a variety of factors; the socio-economic level of a neighbourhood, habits, preferences of residents, and regional accessibility conditions.
