Course format

The ACRE™ Training programme is an intensive course and is divided into two modules which are taught over five days. Our expert instructors will provide in-depth, practical coaching and you will receive feedback from both your instructor and your peers.

Successful completion entitles you to:

  • Apply for admission to the RICS President’s International Panel of Dispute Resolvers. This would allow you to be considered for appointment by RICS to act as a mediator.
  • Successful completion of both Modules 1 and 2 is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and entitles you apply to become a CIArb Member.
  • The RICS Mediation Programme is recognised by the International Mediation Institute (IMI).
  • The programme is also recognised by the Civil Mediation Council (CMC).

Module 1

Introduction to Mediation and Mediation Advocacy

Suitable as a stand-alone course for those interested in entering the growing market for qualified mediation representatives, this introductory module provides the essential baseline skills to enable delegates to develop and expand their proficiency as a party representative. There is no formal assessment for this module, but 100% attendance is required.

Module 2

Practical mediation Skills and mediation Training

Module 2 is for those seeking qualification as an RICS Accredited Mediator. This intensive two-day training programme builds upon the skills acquired on Module 1 to develop your practical skills as a mediator.

This module is intensely hands-on with coaching and feedback throughout the role play exercises. Delegates participate in role play scenarios based on real life cases, acting as mediator and party with instructor and peer feedback.

Day four – Consolidation

  • Extended practical training
  • Consolidation of skills learned in Module One
  • Running a mediation alone.

Day Five – Advanced skills and assessment

  • Advanced mediation skills
  • Time limited mediation
  • Video assessment.

Dr John Fletcher

Executive Director, Dispute Resolution, RICS

Dr John Fletcher was born in South Africa took his B Com LLB from Rhodes University and his M Phil and PhD in administrative law from Cambridge. He returned to SA and practised as a barrister at the Johannesburg Bar for ten years in a civil commercial practice with some constitutional work. John is the Executive Director of Dispute Resolution of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and is responsible for RICS’s international dispute resolution services including arbitration, adjudication, dispute boards, mediation and expert witnesses. Prior to working for RICS, John was the Projects Director for ADR Group. He developed their international joint ventures in South Africa, Europe, Brazil, the Caribbean and other developing countries; their UK workplace mediation service; and their mediation training in UK universities.
