A Dispute Board is involved with the project or venture from inception through to completion and has ‘hands on’ knowledge of every aspect of the process. The Dispute Board knows the parties, knows their goals and objectives, and can act efficiently to prevent a dispute from arising or, if one does, to give a decision in some cases.
Learn the skills needed to become an effective Dispute Board member. Learn about the concept, history, governing law, and practice of Dispute Boards internationally, and qualify as a member of the RICS Dispute Board Register.
Learning objectives
Comprehend the evolution and significance of Dispute Boards, as well as their comparison to alternative dispute resolution methods. Acquire practical knowledge of Dispute Board processes, including legal frameworks, relevant contracts, and ethical considerations.
Learn about the appointment process for Dispute Boards, addressing conflicts of interest and fee structures, as well as understanding the roles of board members, including the chair. Explore the administration of Dispute Boards, including site visits and meetings, and develop skills in drafting various documents and effectively communicating within the board and with involved parties.
Gain insights into conducting effective site visits, including preparation, agendas, and handling matters of concern. Develop skills in managing potential conflicts of interest and dealing with difficult parties throughout the dispute resolution process.
Prepare and draft recommendations and decisions.

Assessment
Module 1: 100% attendance
Module 2: Assignment based on situational scenario
Module 3: Role play assessment
Module 4: Write a decision/recommendation
Successfully complete all of the above assessments to obtain the course completion certificate.
Accreditation
RICS DRS is currently developing criteria for ‘RICS Accredited Dispute Board member’ status. By successfully completing the above assessments and if you meet our criteria, you will be eligible to apply for accredited status. The application will involve an additional fee and a panel interview, details will be finalised at a later date.
