Overview

Deconstruction plays a key role in enabling circularity by facilitating the reuse and recycling of materials and components at the end of a building's lifecycle.

This approach minimises landfill waste and significantly reduces embodied carbon, both essential pillars of circularity. It is estimated that construction and demolition waste accounts for nearly one-third of global solid waste generated, making deconstruction and disassembly a critical strategy for sustainable building practices.

Achieving effective deconstruction requires careful design and logistical planning, including consideration of transportation and storage, structural assessments, materials data and environmental impacts.
