Brian Motherway is Head of the Energy Efficiency Division of the International Energy Agency (IEA). In this excerpt, taken from his keynote speech at WBEF Week 2023, he presents IEA insight on the future of energy demand, energy security, and energy efficiency.  

Amid an unprecedented global energy crisis in 2023, governments around the world allocated more than USD 1 trillion in temporary support to help with affordability in 2022-3, with many countries seeking to improve the energy efficiency of poorest people’s homes. While dependence on natural gas for residential heating demand continues to challenge selected countries, energy efficiency gains have substantially reduced the potential growth in global energy demand over the last 6 years.
