One of the most encouraging aspects of RICS’ ongoing transformation is the lead members are taking to shape the future of their profession and the support RICS delivers. I have always felt the combined talents and individual perspectives represented across our global membership are unique strengths for the profession and RICS, and I am pleased that so many members are stepping forward to drive progress.

As mentioned in my previous update, in the first half of 2023 our goal is for members to take up around 60 leadership positions across RICS Governing Council, Boards, Committees and panels, and I would urge all interested members to review the open roles which are published here. In particular, I would highlight that the process for electing 20 Governing Council members and two new Senior Vice Presidents opened on 30 January. Council seats up for election cover six professional disciplines, 13 geographies and a final seat reserved for a member under 30 years of age, under the new composition agreed as a key element of our transformation. Elections will be held in the first half of 2023 in order for a new Council configuration to be in place by 1 July.

Members should also be aware of forthcoming opportunities to apply for chair and member positions on Professional Group Panels (PGPs), set to be advertised in Spring following Governing Council’s recent approval of consultation responses on the subject. Strong participation in the consultation delivered insightful feedback which will be used to inform the development of PGPs and specific next steps, details of which may be viewed here.

These are just some of the many avenues open to members to make a real difference by leading change and leading the future of our profession. Your insights will help us navigate the many exciting challenges and opportunities unfolding across our sector today and in the years ahead, so please find out more about how to apply your unique experience to setting the direction of your Institution today.

I was honoured to attend a celebration of the inauguration of Ann Gray FRICS as RICS President in an event at Great George Street in London. Addressing an audience of both experienced and newer professionals, Ann gave an inspiring address describing her passion for her work as a member of the profession and outlining her vision for the coming year. As well as giving a fascinating overview of her journey to becoming an RICS member, she emphasised the essential nature of our profession’s commitment to the public advantage, praising RICS members for the major contribution she sees them making to tackling challenges in our world. I am delighted to see Ann in post and I look forward to supporting her in her Presidency this year.

Looking ahead, February marks LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK and Black History Month in the US. Under these banners, RICS will be showcasing the diversity of the profession and the ground-breaking work members are leading in these areas, both to nurture the next generation and ensure our profession is the welcoming and supportive place we want to see for all who wish to apply their talents as part of our industry. Please look out for updates in the coming weeks on how to find out more and get involved.

My best wishes to you all, and thank you for your continued commitment to professionalism.
