Meet Spencer Ward, Director – Transaction Management, Cushman & Wakefield

Spencer gained his MRICS in 2019, qualifying on the Senior Professional route, in Real Estate.

How long have you been a counsellor?

I’ve been working with my candidate for 18 months. He submitted in 2024, but unfortunately did not pass the interview stage, therefore we reassessed what was missing and plan to resubmit in 2025.

What has been your experience as a Counsellor so far?

It’s been invigorating guiding the candidate through the process and giving my support.

What do you find most challenging about working with candidates?

The most challenging part is helping a candidate to understand that they may not yet be ready, even if they thought they were.  That’s hard to hear, but you need to be able to explain why.

What has helped you?

I have used the RICS resources including the Counsellor training, and have had support from Veda, the Candidate Support Coordinator.  Veda has been extremely helpful, providing further resources that I was able to share with my candidate.

I also lead on a Mentorship program within Cushman & Wakefield and have utilized my experience within that program to understand and further assist with my candidate.

What advice would you give a candidate just starting out?

Do your due diligence, plan way ahead, set goals, use your counsellor wisely and make sure you schedule set meetings for updates. Additionally, join any RICS webinars, especially preparation for submission and the final interview.

What advice would you give a counsellor just starting out?

I have been  fortunate to have mentors to guide me through my career, so I am glad to pay it forward.  Seeing others succeed in this industry is something very fulfilling
