Nigel Clarke has been appointed as the permanent Chair of RICS’ Standards and Regulation Board (SRB).
Nigel takes up the role after serving as the independent interim Chair of SRB for the last four months. Bringing a wealth of experience in a career spanning the last 40 years including a long involvement with professional regulation, business and government, he has also built a clear understanding of the scope of the surveying profession through leading the interim board.
The appointment follows a competitive recruitment process overseen by an external search agency, which shortlisted a diverse pool of highly experienced candidates for selection.
Nigel is pleased to continue the work he has undertaken at RICS: “It’s an honour to play a part in this institution’s long history and heritage, delivering a proven and successful model of independent regulation operating within RICS.
“Working with the interim SRB members and the supporting RICS teams has been a very positive experience, collaborating to ensure continuity of the RICS independent regulatory functions in line with the Bichard review recommendations.
“I’m pleased to be able to continue this work and there is a great deal to focus on in 2024 and onwards. We will be recruiting a permanent SRB comprising five members and five independent experts as soon as possible, looking to attract the best possible talent available globally to help us deliver effective regulation, fit for a world class institution.
“I am passionately committed to building a diverse, expert board which can successfully oversee delivery of significant projects – such as the Entry and Assessment Review and revised CPD framework - alongside our other regulatory responsibilities.”
The SRB has exclusive responsibility for independently exercising RICS’ regulatory functions, including strategy, governance, structure, policy and operational oversight in the public interest.
Reporting directly to RICS Governing Council, the SRB oversees the activities of RICS’ professional standards, entry and admission to the profession, education and qualification standards, regulatory operations, dispute resolution services and the Regulatory Tribunal.
Ann Gray FRICS, RICS President, congratulated Nigel on a deserved appointment. She said: “We were lucky to have had outstanding candidates to consider for this role, but Nigel’s exceptional experience, integrity, collaborative approach and strategic vision made him the best person to lead the SRB into the next phase of RICS’ standards and regulation model.”
“We welcome him as a permanent colleague and a trusted pair of hands for this incredibly important role for our profession, to strengthen trust and to serve the public interest.”
