Omar Daboun is a recently elected member of RICS. Learn more about Omar’s APC journey and gain insight into why he decided to pursue the ‘tremendous competitive advantage’ in the Q&A below.
I chose to pursue the APC and become an RICS Chartered Project Management Professional as RICS is recognised as a benchmark of excellence in the construction and real estate industries. For me, achieving MRICS status is the cherry on top of my other certifications and academic achievements, showcasing my commitment to excellence, ethical standards, and ongoing professional growth. It’s a distinguished credential that enhances my credibility, aligns my skills with global best practices, and is vital for career advancement and fostering trust with clients and stakeholders.
The APC process has been instrumental in refining my technical skills and enhancing my ability to manage projects effectively. Writing the application, which required me to demonstrate different levels of achievement across various competencies, significantly improved my strategic thinking and enabled me to connect the practical aspects of my work with the skills I’ve developed. It encouraged me to critically reflect on how my day-to-day project management practices align with industry standards and the maturity I’ve achieved in my career, providing me with a clearer understanding of my professional growth and areas for further development.

Overall, the APC process was extremely challenging as it entails an all-around evaluation mechanism of all the skills and competencies I’ve developed. Moving from the extensive writing and documentation phase to the dynamic oral interview pushed me to my limits, testing my ability to navigate every aspect of the evaluation process.
The most challenging part was balancing the time and effort required to complete the documentation with my demanding work schedule. The writing process was particularly time-consuming, as it required deep reflection on my practical experience, aligning it with the required competencies, and providing detailed evidence of my achievements. Additionally, articulating the complexity of my case study and demonstrating how it meets RICS standards posed its own challenge. However, this process ultimately helped me refine my ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely.
The journey of becoming a member significantly enhanced my strategic thinking and reinforced the importance of aligning my work with global best practices. I find that the skills and insights gained through the APC process are enabling me to approach projects with greater confidence, improve my ability to communicate with stakeholders, and position me to take on more senior roles and responsibilities as my career progresses.
Achieving MRICS status is a tremendous competitive advantage that will significantly enhance my career and open doors to more senior roles and international opportunities. For the team I lead, it reinforces the importance of high standards, ethical practices, and continuous development. By sharing the knowledge and skills gained through this process, I can mentor and guide my team members, fostering a culture of excellence and helping them grow in their roles. This status also strengthens my ability to lead by example and ensures we remain competitive and aligned with industry best practices
My advice to potential candidates is that the APC journey can be challenging and exhausting. There will be moments of failure and times when you may feel like giving up. That’s why it’s crucial to approach the journey with stamina, continuous motivation, and a clear focus on your goals, as these are key to successfully completing the process.
Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from mentors or colleagues who have already gone through the process. It’s important to stay organised, manage your time effectively, and be persistent throughout the journey. Ultimately, the APC process is not only about obtaining a qualification, but also about enhancing your professional skills and becoming more confident in what you do.
