We are delighted to confirm the Winners of RICS New Zealand Awards 2023.

The successful teams and individuals of this year’s Awards were announced and celebrated at a formal cocktail ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Auckland on 17 August 2023.

All entries demonstrate industry leading achievements and show the highest standards of professionalism across the built environment in New Zealand.

It was also our honour to announce Mark Synnott FRICS, as the recipient of the most prestigious award for built environment professionals, the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mark Synnott FRICS

Mark joined Colliers International in 1989, when the company was first established in New Zealand. He assisted in establishing the leasing and agency side of the business in Auckland.

In 1994 Mark was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Colliers in New Zealand. Since then, he has grown the Colliers team in New Zealand from 75 to nearly 750 staff.

Mark completed a successful tenure as CEO in April 2023 and moved to the position of Executive Chairman, which involves assisting Colliers New Zealand CEO Gareth Fraser with strategic planning, growth through acquisitions, building relationships with key clients, and recruitment and retention of senior personnel.

Mark has been instrumental in expanding the company’s geographic reach throughout New Zealand and establishing new service lines, including a nationwide Rural & Agribusiness capability and the acquisition of leading project management firm Greenstone Group.

He remains active in securing new and repeat business for the agency.

Maynard Marks

Oaks Queenstown Shores Resort remediation and refurbishment

Maynard Marks' showcased their expertise in dispute resolution/expert witness services and defective building remediation through their involvement in the Oaks Shores litigation and remediation project.

Their comprehensive and meticulous approach to identifying and reporting on defects, coupled with their robust evidence preparation, helped achieve a successful litigation outcome for the client.

Their design and project management expertise, combined with a sustainable, client-focused approach and commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes, ensured that the project was completed successfully and the end result are durable buildings for future communities to enjoy, making them deserving applicants of the Building Consultancy of the year award.

V-Quest.io

Carbon Optimiser

V-Quest is a set of innovative web application tools that have the potential to change the way carbon in buildings is assessed, monitored and controlled during design. It takes the unique approach of showing the interaction between cost, carbon and building mass through the focus of a comparative methodology analysis.

It solves the issue of low availability for carbon and benchmarking data at the earliest stages of design, as well as arming quantity surveyors, project managers, developers and design teams with tools that will simplify the assessment of embodied carbon in buildings throughout design. We are breaking down barriers.

Unispace

Arup

Targeting New Zealand’s first full Living Building Challenge Interior certification, Arup’s new workplace is situated a category-2 listed heritage building; Cooper & Co’s Hayman Kronfield Building in the Britomart Precinct (Tāmaki Makaurau). If certified following its 12-month monitoring period, this workplace will the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Implementing an Early Sub-Contractor Involvement (ESCI)-based turnkey delivery model, the integrated Unispace, Arup, Te Manu Taupua Ltd and sub-contractor project team delivered this ambitious workplace project, with in-depth Te Ao Māori integration, in just 10-months end-to-end. Achieving a 99% waste diversion rate in an 11-week construction window.

AECOM New Zealand

With 30,000 seats (25,000 permanent and 5,000 temporary), and a 36,000-seat capacity for large concerts all under the cover of a roof, Te Kaha is set to become New Zealand's premier and most accessible, inclusive, sustainable and flexible venue.

The AECOM Quality Surveying team was engaged to provide cost management services through the Preconstruction Cervices phase of the project, which was successfully concluded with the execution of a Design & Construct contract for the delivery of the project. AECOM was subsequently re-engaged to provide cost management through to project completion.

Colliers

The Colliers Office Leasing team in Auckland is a market-leading group of professionals with some of the most experienced Brokers in the organisation.

They were involved in many of the biggest office leasing transactions in the Auckland CBD in 2022, including deals with Beca, KiwiRail, and FNZ. They have worked with high-profile clients from the public and private sectors.

They operate with integrity and competence and provide their clients with the best advice in the industry to ensure they can make informed decisions about their office needs.

Victoria University of Wellington

“Environmental Impact of Cities" was authored by Fabricio Chicca, Brenda Vale, and Robert Vale from Victoria University of Wellington's School of Architecture in New Zealand. The team has many years of experience in low-impact buildings and living.

Despite being based in New Zealand, the team coordinated with a network of researchers who gathered data on sustainability in 19 cities, which were then compiled into a database for consumption and sustainability metrics analysis.

Through their groundbreaking work, "Environmental Impact of Cities" provides an analysis of the impact of our current political and economic systems on creating sustainable cities and societies.

Colliers

The Colliers Valuation & Advisory Services team is a specialist division of the organisation with a high level of expertise in the valuation of property.

They had a busy year in 2022, valuing a range of high-profile assets across New Zealand but two projects particularly stood out, the valuations of Britomart in Auckland’s CBD and Ponsonby Central, a well-known mixed-use asset in the suburb of Ponsonby.

Working with a high degree of innovation and professionalism, the team achieved outstanding results in 2022 as they met client expectations ahead of schedule and with a high degree of quality.

Jamie Pye

Jamie Pye is a Senior Project Manager and Engineer who represents industry excellence and who also supports the wider community (especially Māori and Pasifika) as President of South Pacific Engineering in Excellence and a Board member of the NZ Engineering Foundation. As the Lead Project Manager for Auckland Airport's East Terminal Integration and the Operation Control Centre, Jamie is also contributing to the largest redevelopment in the Airport’s history. Exemplary in her field, Jamie is driving a highly complex and regulated build to deliver ahead of schedule and is creating pathways for future Māori and Pasifika engineers.

Natasha Possenniskie MRICS

Natasha Possenniskie is a successful construction industry professional with over 25 years’ experience. Natasha’s career has developed in varied roles in the property sector as client, consultant, main contractor and subcontractor, and more recently as Board Director. Natasha is committed to making a lasting change in the way the sector delivers to ensure a focus on outcomes for the end user as well as achieving a more sustainable and diverse sector. This is evidenced through her work across the industry and the regard in which she is held by her peers through her integrity, professionalism and ethical approach to projects.

Alina Barankova MRICS

Alina Barankova is an Associate Director in PwC’s Advisory Services practice, based in Auckland. She is an RICS qualified Chartered Surveyor, a Registered Valuer, full member of the Property Institute of New Zealand and is a Green Building Accredited Professional.

Alina has been working in the property industry for over seven years, her valuation and advisory background coupled with her strong technical and bespoke financial modelling skills enable her to be uniquely placed to assist our clients on a range of complex property issues and deliver on PwC’s purpose of building trust in society and solving important problems.

Nicole Whitley

Commencing her Beca career in 2014, Nicole is now a Team leader, and prominent figure in our 50 strong team. She plays a significant leadership role whilst actively delivering large, complex projects.

Nicole is a true people leader who inspires her team to achieve and exceed their goals. She leads by example, and her dedication to delivering excellence in everything she does serves as an inspiration to her colleagues.

Kerry and Vimal demonstrated strong leadership skills by proactively identifying and mitigating potential risks, ensuring contractors, stakeholders, and suppliers were aligned with project goals, and fostering a positive team culture.

They showed adaptability in responding to unforeseen challenges and using creative problem-solving to find innovative solutions. Communication was also a strength, with Kerry and Vimal maintaining clear and frequent communication with stakeholders to keep them informed of progress and any changes.

Vulcan Steel Portfolio

Bayleys Building Consultancy Team was engaged in 2022 by AUX-listed Vulcan Steel to provide a high level of condition reporting and performance analysis for 18 assets in 14 regions across New Zealand. Utilising professional skills and the breadth of Bayleys’ nationally-connected network, challenges including time measurable delivery, logistics, specialised skills and diplomacy given the sensitivities relating to the acquisition of a locally-owned operation were faced and overcome.

Ultimately, the value provided by the Bayleys Building Consultancy Team and their ability to achieve an optimal reporting programme for the client has instilled confidence and facilitated continued expansion plans to maximum efficiency.

Tesla Portfolio

Global automotive and clean energy brand Tesla engaged Bayleys Commercial exclusively to provide sales and leasing support as it sought to expand operations across New Zealand in key markets Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Seven transactions resulted in $3.2 million in agency fees and a portfolio of works which demonstrates the the depth of connectivity across the BRE network. Bayleys Commercial overcame specific challenges to meet the business’ rapidly growing demands for accommodation, exceeding expectations of service and engaging the market beyond traditional channels to achieve optimal outcomes for stakeholders, including the client/tenant, developers, landlords and the broader business environment.

The Colliers Strategic Advisory Team is a five-strong unit that provides specialist property consultancy and advice across all sectors of commercial real estate.

They work with investors, developers, occupiers, and other advisors, and their clients include some of New Zealand’s most successful organisations across the public and private sectors.

During the past year they continued to grow the team, and worked on more than 60 projects, many of which required a high degree of confidentiality and multi-disciplinary expertise. Their work across a broad range of industries highlights their capability and sought-after advice that make them market leaders.

Simon O’Brien, a Director of Hampton Jones projected managed the design and construction of the award-winning Carlin boutique hotel in Queenstown, with the assistance of Gabrielle Trip and Lisa Rudman.

The 7-level terraced Carlin boutique hotel offers a beyond 5-star experience across its eight luxuriously appointed 1, 2 and 3 bedroom suites and restaurant, Oro, with each offering exceptional views across Lake Wakatipu.

Since opening its doors in 2022, the Carlin has already been awarded World’s Best New Hotel, Best New Hotel: Australasia and Best Hotel with a View: Australasia in the boutique hotel awards, amongst others.

Ged Finch has lead the development and commercialisation of a circular building technology called XFrame. Over the past 5 years he has relentlessly committed himself to the pursuit of a vision of a building industry that does not create waste.

Through tireless prototyping, fundraising and effort, Ged’s XFrame technology is now established in the Australian and New Zealand building market. Building systems that reduce waste are critical to the future of construction and Ged's efforts are at the leading edge of such change.

Brittany Robertson is a member of the Colliers Valuation & Advisory Services team, having joined the company in a part-time role in 2020 while completing her university studies.

Robertson is currently studying towards becoming a registered Valuer that will lead to her becoming a RICS member. She is highly thought of within Colliers and the wider property industry based on her dedicated work ethic and impressive knowledge of the valuations space.

She has already proven herself adept at undertaking big challenges for Colliers and her valuation work of high-profile Auckland assets in 2022, including the Britomart precinct, was exemplary.

Helen Hollis is a retail leasing expert at Colliers with 20 years of industry experience.

Her award-winning career has included working on some of New Zealand’s most iconic shopping destinations, such as Sylvia Park in Auckland and Bayfair Shopping Centre in Mount Maunganui.

She puts her clients first and delivers projects to an exemplary standard. Her work on the Mānawa Bay shopping centre at Auckland Airport has been pivotal in the project coming to life.

Hollis leads a team of five people at Colliers is held in high regard by retailers, landlords, and her peers.

Lifetime Achievement Award	Recognising commitment to RICS and the wider profession, the Lifetime Achievement Award is the most prestigious award for built environment professionals. The presentation of this award is subject to the determination of the judging panel that the recipient is worthy of this significant honour.	RICS will provide recommendation(s) on the worthy recipient for the judging panel’s consideration.

- Use of surveying knowledge and/or professional expertise in areas such as technical, financial, legal, environmental, building regulation, sustainability and restoration where applicable, to achieve outcomes.

Teamwork

· Effective coordination of skillsets among team members and with stakeholders.

· Resources optimisation. How were resources effectively pulled and utilised to overcome the identified challenges and difficulties against a predefined target?

· Demonstration of commitment to diversity and inclusion of the team or project team will be highly regarded.

Innovation

· Was an innovative approach used to deliver the outcome?

· Was any innovative outcome generated?

· How was technology applied to deliver the outcome?

· Was any innovative technology applied to enhance site safety (if applicable)?

· Was any smart information technology applied for document control and communication to enhance productivity?

Sustainability

· Quantitative analysis on sustainability considerations and achievements.

· Demonstration of creating better places and spaces for future generations.

· Demonstrated adoption of sustainable development principles.

· Social Impact. How did the nominated team promote and educate stakeholders about sustainability in the community and improve the community more broadly?

Team and company awards

Nominated project(s) and major/key team member(s) must be located or operated in the Awards region being submitted for.
Nominations can be made by the nominee (team, company or consortia) or a third party.
The project(s) which is the subject of the nomination must have been worked on within the 2022 calendar year, though not necessarily completed.
Nominations must be based on at least one but no more than three projects within the calendar year (nominating party to select).
A company may submit a joint nomination however, where a joint nomination is submitted a subsequent, stand-alone application from the same company, on the same project(s) and in the same category is not allowed.
Nominations must be submitted via the online submission platform. Where multiple nominations are being submitted by the one organisation, a separate online submission will need to be completed for each nomination.
Nomination must be accompanied by a 100-word summary for marketing purposes.
Other relevant supporting materials/documents are optional but welcomed. These should be limited to a maximum of five additional photographs, three additional pieces of supporting material/documents and three testimonials. (Documents and testimonials should be in PDF format.)
A logo must be provided as well as a photo of the team or individual This will be used for marketing purposes and during award presentations.
Information provided within the submission may be used by RICS for the purpose of the judging or promotion of the Any confidential information must be clearly stated within the submission.

Young Achiever of the Year Award

In addition to the individual award criteria, the Young Achiever of the Year must have been born on or after 1 January 1987 (i.e. be aged 35 or under during the 2022 calendar year) to be eligible.

Nomination check list

An online submission is completed for each nomination.
For team awards, at least one but no more than three projects have been included in the nomination.
Supporting material may include testimonials, photographs, technical documentation, media clippings, floor plans, etc. to support the adjudication process.
Supporting material is limited to a maximum of five additional photographs, three additional pieces of relevant material/documents and three testimonials.
In addition to the nomination and supporting materials, the nomination is accompanied by at least 1 photograph of the team/individuals nominated, the project(s) nominated and includes a copy of the nominee’s company logo (as appropriate).
Confidential information is clearly labelled ‘RICS Awards in Confidence’.

Manager National Asset Management at Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities

Rob is a senior officer in the Royal New Zealand Naval Reserve, and currently the Manager of National Asset Management at Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities. Prior to taking up this position he was the CEO of Development Christchurch Limited (DCL), where he led a team focussed on supporting development opportunities and facilitating investment into Christchurch with the goal of contributing towards making Christchurch a modern world class city. Rob is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and has also been a Fellow of the Charted Institution of Water and Environmental Management. He has held a number of governance roles, including the New Zealand Registered Architects Board, the Arts Centre of Christchurch, Canterbury SPCA as well as in education.

Dean of Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation at Victoria University of Wellington

Robyn worked in architectural practice, designing residential, commercial and industrial projects, ranging from Police stations, and office design to hospitals, prior to becoming an academic. She has extensive expertise in zero carbon buildings, energy efficiency and productivity. She is a Fellow of RICS, Director of the New Zealand Green Building Council (Research), Chair of the MoE’s Ventilation Technical Advisory Group, Trustee of the Property Foundation and a member of the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate. She is a Co-Director of the Healthy Housing Research Group which won the Prime Ministers Science Team Prize in 2014 and the Rutherford Science Team Prize 2021.

Associate Dean External Engagement at The University of Auckland Business School

Dr Deborah Levy is a Professor and Head of the department of Property at the University of Auckland Business School. She is internationally recognised for her behavioural research focusing on property markets and widely published in academic property journals. She is passionate about teaching and educating young people to excel in a career in property. She is a fellow of RICS and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.

Principal, AREA

Peter is an independent property investment and development advisor. Peter has a wide range of experience in investment management, particularly property investment and development, and has worked in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Bermuda.

Peter has previously held senior leadership roles at number of large New Zealand property organisations including Auckland International Airport, Stride Property Group (Chief Executive), Goodman, Property for Industry, Sky City Entertainment Group and AMP Capital.
