The UK’s most outstanding recent building projects went head-to-head for top national accolades at the RICS Awards Grand Final on 04 October, held at the Park Plaza Riverbank in London.
The Awards celebrated the UK’s most inspirational built projects that are having a significant positive impact on the communities they serve. Congratulations to all the winners.

A collaboration between Hugh Broughton Architects and Martin Ashley Architects has successfully guided the recent restoration of the Grade II* listed Sheerness Dockyard Church, which has been transformed from a fire damaged ruin to a welcoming new community hub for people on the Isle of Sheppey.
The team have achieved a delicate balance, authentically restoring the historic fabric whilst re-presenting the interior to suit its new civic purpose, working together since 2017 to deliver this exemplary heritage-led regeneration scheme.

The new Morpeth Sports and Leisure Centre is a sophisticated example of how well-designed co-located facilities can strengthen and champion diversity within a local community.
By working closely with joint clients Northumberland County Council and Active Northumberland, our design team worked to develop a new typology of public sector building, combining sport and leisure with community facilities.
Designed pre-covid, delivered during lockdowns, supply chain issues, and an impending recession, the centre shows how sports & leisure facilities can be the backbone of the evolving UK High Street, increasing participation in sport and improving the overall wellbeing of a whole community.

Kew An Lergh, Nansledan, Newquay
ADAM Architecture
Kew an Lergh is a mixed-use phase of the Nansledan masterplan providing 4,000 homes and 4,000 jobs. Accommodation comprises a nursery school, office spaces, a retail unit and a café arranged as distinctive arts and crafts buildings around a multi-use square, forming a central focus to the local neighbourhood. The Duchy of Cornwall set up a construction arm during Covid to keep the jobless skilled local workforce employed thus retaining the high-quality team which delivered the project. Sustainability and social value are key features of the project which uses ground source heat and is used for local social events.

Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs
Dwr Cymru Welsh Water
Welsh Water is nominating the redevelopment Lisvane & Llanishen Reservoirs site for the Community Benefit Project Award. Saved by the Reservoir Action Group from becoming a housing development; Welsh Water has been working closely with the local community since acquiring the site in 2016.
The redevelopment includes three projects - the visitor centre, ENRAW & Community Woodland projects. Collectively the projects have transformed the site, providing high quality facilities, green and blue space, and enabling access for all whilst protecting the ecology and enhancing biodiversity on site. The site opened to the public as a hub for health and wellbeing in July 2023.
Viking Energy Network, Jarrow (VENJ), South Tyneside
South Tyneside Council
The Viking Energy Network Jarrow (VENJ) is South Tyneside Council’s (STC) cutting-edge renewable energy scheme. It is first of its kind in the UK to utilise a combination of three renewable energy sources.
VENJ harnesses low-grade heat from the River Tyne, exporting it to nine council owned buildings, including high-rise flats and leisure facilities. The benefits of VENJ are threefold: reducing greenhouse gas emissions; creating a reliable, good-value source of heat and improving energy security by diversifying from fossil fuels into the renewable energy sector. It is estimated that VENJ will save 1,035 tonnes of CO2 and £492,000 annually.

St Comgall’s–Ionad Eileen Howell, Belfast

St Comgall’s–Ionad Eileen Howell is a historic building in west Belfast with stunning Neo-Georgian brickwork and traditional slated roofs and holds immense local significance. The once derelict and dilapidated former school St Comgall's, owned by Falls Community Council, has undergone a remarkable transformation. The refurbishment and repair of the building has brought new life into the building, making it a valuable asset for the local community. With its added offices, café, and versatile spaces for events and exhibitions, the Grade B1-listed building on Divis Street has been meticulously refurbished resulting in a stunning example of first-class urban regeneration in Belfast.

Imagine a new building inspired by the ’15-minute neighbourhood’, providing affordable homes with easy access to amenities - shops, restaurants, leisure – and some on site, like a nursery for your children, and classrooms for higher education. Imagine an adjacent park and trees, blending neatly with neighbouring homes, and a nursery garden inside its perimeter, providing inhabitants – residents, students, toddlers, teachers – with green space to play and relax in.
It sounds ideal but it describes a real place, designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards and built by Hill for the London Borough of Waltham Forest as hands-on developer.

Athelhampton Zero
SPASE Architects + Surveyors
Athelhampton House, a Grade I Listed Building and Tudor Manor estate, was consuming £55,000 of energy in 2019, which post covid and Ukrainian conflict would have been a six-figure sum. SPASE led a multidisciplinary team from feasibility to handover in achieving a Carbon Neutral scheme to run the estate.
A combination of new 3phase electricity network, for 130kW solar PV, 15 ASHP, 4 GSHP, 12 Tesla batteries and more. Athelhampton now saves 100 tonnes of Carbon annually and has a nominal energy bill of £500 annually, with fossil fuels removed from the site. This is the first of its kind.
Bank Station Capacity Upgrade
Transport for London
Bank is one of the world’s largest and most complex underground railway stations with over 100,000 passengers using the station each peak period. The £0.7 billion Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project provided improved passenger access, circulation, and interchange and delivered step free access and compliant emergency fire and evacuation within budget.
The meaningful design, innovative engineering, and disciplined construction with a innovative contractor engagement tender approach have ultimately bought a station that has its origins in the early 1900s into the modern era, providing London with a best-in-class transport hub that will serve its users well into the next century.

He has ensured the opportunity of board membership is broadened to welcome surveyors and non-surveyors from a range of backgrounds. Peter has given 100s of hours in service to the profession, to members and their families and deserved to be recognised for his contribution.

Fleming Buildings Limited
Fleming Buildings on behalf of Strathblane Community Development Trust (SCDT) embarked on a major project to create a new community library to replace the village’s library facility, a 124 sq metre dilapidated 40-year-old portacabin. Despite its size, age and limited opening hours, Strathblane Library is one of the council’s busiest rural librariesThe new library is a striking modern building with advanced net zero carbon energy system – a partnership between SCDT and Stirling Council.
The first community-council partnership to deliver library services in Scotland: a blend of charitable and donor finance, community enterprise and local authority expertise.
The outcome is impressive with the number of library users being increased significantly and adjoining community rooms being well used. Good value engineering enabled to project to be delivered at reasonable cost without detracting from the effectiveness of the end use. The building was designed and delivered to be Net Zero Carbon and is the first building in Scotland to have EPC Rating of -1. This project is an outstanding example of how an initial significant single donation coupled with drive and enthusiasm within the locality can result in meaningful contribution to the community.

Wingfield Station
Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust
Peter Milner FRICS, of the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust, Project Lead for the restoration of Grade II* Wingfield Station in Derbyshire has nominated this successful project as an exemplar of cooperation between a buildings preservation trust, local authority and Historic England to ensure this rarest surviving intact pioneer era railway station, once described by Christian Barman as the most ”perfect of station houses” has been saved for future generations to enjoy and admire.
Wingfield is the embodiment of the skill and innovation of George and Robert Stephenson in bringing rail travel to the world, changing the way we worked forever. Neglected for over 40 years, Wingfield Station is the only surviving of the 26 station houses designed by Francis Thompson and commissioned by George and Robert Stephenson for the North Midland Railway which opened in 1840. Steeped in rich history this is an exemplar restoration of this Grade II* listed station house. Passionately saved from dereliction by the team it’s future is now ensured and Wingfield Station will now benefit enthusiasts and community groups alike.

Selina is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with over 15 years of experience in the Built Environment, encompassing both Main Contracting and Consultancy. Hugh joined the national panel in 2019, having for the previous 10 years been a judge for the RICS Awards London Region, including 3 years as Chair of the regional panel. He is the panel’s Community Benefit judge.
His career has spanned valuation, property management and development, and arbitration in the firms Kemsley Whiteley & Ferris and Matthews & Goodman. He was Hon Treasurer to the RICS from 1996 to 2000.
He was also Chairman of the charity Winged Fellowship Trust, now known as ReVitalise, from 1989 to 2004

Richard retired from practice just over two years ago and is panels Commercial category Judge. A former Chair of the Regional RICS Awards Judging panel in the West Midlands, he has been involved in the RICS Awards for a number of years.
He is also former Chair of RICS UK & Ireland World Regional Board and sat on Governing Council for a number of years. Richard specialises in commercial property management together with Landlord and Tenant issues and has recently taken up a position as a visiting lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton helping develop the next generation of RICS members.
David Sandbrook FRICS
David Sandbrook is a chartered surveyor, chartered planner and chartered waste & resource manager with over 35 years’ professional experience gained within commercial property and the specialist mineral, waste management and renewable energy sectors. David is a Director of Sandbrook Land & Minerals Limited advising mineral & waste operators, landowners and infrastructure providers on estate management, valuation and planning matters, with particular specialisms in compulsory purchase and severed mineral interests. He is a RICS Registered Valuer and Accredited Expert Witness.
David is a Member of the RICS Knowledge & Practice Committee and Chair of the RICS Land & Natural Resources Professional Group Panel.
David lives in Derbyshire, where he is a Trustee and operational Member of Derby Mountain Rescue Team. He is also a Director of the Katherine Martin Charitable Trust, supporting NSPCC, Barnardo’s and RSPCA.

Kerry is a Partner at Gardiner & Theobald and has over 35 years’ experience in the construction industry; starting her career with John Laing Construction in 1988 before joining Holloway White Allom in 1997 where she specialised in the heritage and super prime residential market including running the country house division before moving into consultancy in 2011.
Kerry is an APC Assessor, Mentor for the G&T Mentoring Programme and is a senior management representative for the G&T Building for Women Initiative.

Sean Farrell is an Associate Director with KSN Project Management and has worked at senior management level across various roles including Client Representative, Contract Administrator, Project Manager, Building Surveyor and Engineer. Sean has been a Chartered Building Surveyor for 20 years.
Through his consultancy and development experience with Tier 1 Main Contractors across Ireland, the UK and the US, Sean understands international best practice and applies his immense technical knowledge in the successful delivery of outstanding projects. His integrated and collaborative approach has seen him lead project teams across a diverse range of sectors, from residential and commercial to education, health and retail in the delivery of new-build, refurbishment, repurposing and fit-out. Sean’s most recent residential project is Sandford Lodge, an exclusive development of 36 high quality garden apartments and duplexes in Dublin 6.

Mike is a Chartered Building Surveyor and Chartered Project Management Surveyor currently employed by a Tier 1 construction contractor, ISG. Mike's journey in construction began as a joiner, where he started to develop a hands-on understanding of the built environment, transitioning into roles in quantity surveying and construction management, acquiring diverse skills along the way.
Mike later joined Tesco and discovered his passion for building surveying, and since then, he has never looked back. Driven by a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement. Mike is deeply invested in nurturing future talent within the industry. He sits on the RICS Yorkshire & Humber Regional Board and actively engages with other professional bodies, leveraging his knowledge and experience to mentor and support emerging professionals.

Richard is a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and is the Principal Consultant and founder of Obsidyan Limited, a specialist consultancy that provides Quantity Surveying, contract and dispute resolution services.
Richard has worked in the construction industry for over 22 years for specialist contractors, Tier 1 Contractors as well as large consultancies. His experience includes a diverse range of projects that include major highways, mining, ground engineering and construction projects ranging up to £200m in value.
Richard is passionate about supporting others with their professional ambitions and progression, particular with their route to membership of the RICS.
Saba Nayab BSc FRICS
Saba is an experienced surveyor with a depth of knowledge in valuations, regeneration, land acquisition and development. She holds a postgraduate from Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.
Previously CBRE’s UK Director of Sustainability in Valuations, she focuses on sustainability in real estate, making the RICS Awards Revitalisation/ Refurbishment category an ideal fit for her expertise.
Saba was previously a Judge on the London regional panel of the Awards for seven years and chair of the London panel for a further three years. She is currently mentoring for two women’s networks.

Twelve Architects & Masterplanners
The Grade II Listed Castlefield Viaduct has been restored and reinvented in a pilot scheme led by the National Trust and designed by Twelve Architects. The pilot seeks to marry the city’s proud industrial heritage with a modern urban park concept.
Since its opening, members of the community have experienced the park first-hand. Their feedback will shape the vision for the the permanent regeneration of the viaduct. Initially planned to be open for a year, the pilot scheme has been extended until the end of 2024, due to its widespread success.
The Grade II Listed Castlefield Viaduct has been restored and reinvented in a pilot scheme led by the National Trust and designed by Twelve Architects.
Astley Hall
Maybank Buildings Conservation LLP
Astley Hall, Chorley, is a Grade I-listed late C16th gentry house with an early C17th principal south range. Our connection with Astley started with a full building survey in 2001, repeated in 2011.
In 2015 we repaired internal movement in the Great Hall, preventing the collapse of some of the UK’s richest C17th plasterwork. Working closely with the Local Authority owners, we developed a major scheme of conservation repairs, which started in 2021 with a £1.3M refurbishment contract to conserve and transform the south range exterior. Works included cementitious render removal, and major repair works to roofs and windows.

The Silk Street development in Newton Heath, East Manchester, provides 69 high-quality, low-carbon homes for affordable social rent in an area where need is greatest. The development brings a long-term brownfield site back into use, creating a lasting community with homes in a range of sizes.
Some are designed for over-55s who are right-sizing from other council properties; these feature a larger internal footprint designed to HAPPI standards, to accommodate wheelchair users, plus extra storage space.
Sustainable technologies reduce costs for residents, helping prevent fuel poverty and supporting Manchester City Council’s target of becoming a zero-carbon city by 2028.
The development brings a long-term brownfield site back into use, creating a lasting community with homes in a range of sizes.
The Municipal Hotel and Spa by M:Gallery, Liverpool

This magnificent project is the result of excellent work by FCH Architects in collaboration with our client Fragrance Group, main contractor Russell WBHO, and consultant teams, in transforming the iconic Municipal Buildings into a luxury four-star hotel.Municipal Hotel, Liverpool, MGallery is a stunning Victorian building that dates to 1868 and was built to accommodate Liverpool City Council, who were custodians until its sale in 2017.
Municipal Buildings represents much more than a refurbished heritage building. Its new lease of life has reinvigorated the illustrious historic district, at the heart of Liverpool.

Walker Sime - New Victoria, Manchester City centre

As Quantity Surveyor on the £110M+ award-winning PRS scheme “New Victoria” for Muse, Walker Sime has played a pivotal role in the delivery of a 520-apartment scheme which was completed 9 months ahead of schedule and on budget.
This immensely complex project involved developing two towers on a site which sits next to tramlines and Victoria station, and above a culvert. Despite multiple challenges, not least Covid, harnessing sustainable and low-carbon technology, implementing a ONE team delivery approach for all stakeholders, and unique collaboration through social value initiatives (like LifeShare), redefined the impact such developments can have on the community.

Viking Energy Network, Jarrow (VENJ), South Tyneside

The Viking Energy Network Jarrow (VENJ) is South Tyneside Council’s (STC) cutting-edge renewable energy scheme. It is first of its kind in the UK to utilise a combination of three renewable energy sources.
VENJ harnesses low-grade heat from the River Tyne, exporting it to nine council owned buildings, including high-rise flats and leisure facilities. The benefits of VENJ are threefold: reducing greenhouse gas emissions; creating a reliable, good-value source of heat and improving energy security by diversifying from fossil fuels into the renewable energy sector. It is estimated that VENJ will save 1,035 tonnes of CO2 and £492,000 annually.

In Newcastle's recent history, luxury residential projects have been scarce. Adderstone, a Newcastle-based developer, has dedicated 25 years to regenerating the city and sought to redefine this narrative. Enter Hanover Point: Newcastle's inaugural luxury apartment development. Spanning eight floors, ten unique apartments showcase panoramic views of iconic landmarks such as Tyne Bridge, Millennium Bridge, St James' Park, and Central Station.
The project faced hurdles, including site constraints, pandemic impacts, and rising inflation. Overcoming these challenges has been achieved, and Adderstone takes pride in contributing to the city's urban landscape with the delivery of this architectural gem on the Quayside.

Ledston Hall is a Grade I listed country house, set within a Grade II* registered Park and Gardens in Yorkshire. Dating back to the 12th century, the hall had been largely vacant since the 1950s and was on the 'Heritage at Risk' register.
The project entailed extensive building fabric repairs, extensions, and adaption to interior layouts to create 10 luxury residential properties with private function rooms, a new entrance road, energy centre, landscaping and repairs to external features.
The hall showcases many historic features whilst creating light, modern homes. This repair and renovation project has secured Ledston Hall’s future.

The once-abandoned home to the rarest camellias in the Western world has opened to the public for the first time in 50 years after a successful capital transformation by Donald Insall Associates, and has been removed from Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register.
Camellia House received £4m of National Lottery Heritage Fund funding to transform the site into a contemporary tearoom and multipurpose venue, whilst simultaneously providing an internal climate that protects and enhances the camellias.
As a result, this heritage asset has been brought back for the public to enjoy, and the internationally important camellias are protected for generations.

Tower Works

Tower Works is a build-to-rent scheme situated within Leeds’ historic Tower Works canal-side site. Part of the Holbeck Urban Village renovation area, and ongoing Leeds South Bank regeneration, the mixed-use sustainable development sensitively regenerates a former industrial site. 245 city living homes have been created as studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartments and duplexes, in two new buildings.
The transformational development was designed around the site’s three landmark Grade II Listed 1860s towers, with commercial and amenity facilities on the ground floor. Works commenced on site in January 2021 and completed in summer 2023. See team details in Appendix 1.

The dynamic space also features an events area that forms part of the foyer and public cafe, art displays, a gaming area for teenagers, a dedicated children’s library, a teaching area, and a bookable 100-person meeting space.

Redundant Wingfield Station, Grade II*, designated by the Victorian Society as one of the ten most "At Risk" buildings in the country had been neglected for over 40 years by the owner.
With the aid of Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust the site was acquired by the local authority by way of CPO (2019) and transferred to the DHBT to undertake the restoration and conversion to a viable, sustainable re-use. The CPO was supported by Historic England. The National Lottery Heritage Fund provided round one funding. Urgent works largely funded by HE. Round two grant to complete the project by NHLF.

The area boasts a heritage significance within the market area. Mindful of this, the developer aligned with the local aesthetic, taking care not to eclipse the historical elements of the surroundings. This approach has enhanced the area's appeal, making it more inviting to the public.

Grade I-listed medieval building Lord Leycester is home for service veterans known as the Brethren, and has re-opened to the public after 18 months of sensitive and intricate improvement works.
The project focused on securing financial sustainability by repairing the buildings and improving the Heritage visitor experience. The project was funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with other national and local community donors. A 23% increase in areas accessible to the public and improved thermal comfort were part of the results of the upgrade works by a design team led by Donald Insall Associates.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust (WHT) identified the need to re-develop and expand their emergency capacity to cope with local demand and a predicted increase in activity expected by Autumn 2022 as a result of a change in catchment area associated with the opening of the Midland Metropolitan Hospital (MMH).
The Trust produced an Outline Business Case (OBC) which identified the preferred option as a two-storey new build extension adjacent to the existing emergency department, including the refurbishment of the existing department to provide accommodation, which supports an integrated model of emergency, urgent, and ambulatory care.

The Goodsyard, Birmingham

The Goodsyard (previously known as Hockley Mills) is a 395-apartment residential-led mixed use site in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. The site is adjacent to the Jewellery Quarter train and tram station and is on the cusp of a conservation area.
With this in mind, the Developer introduced a new access to the train station with public realm through the site, aligning the design with the local aesthetic, re-introducing historical themes throughout the design on the scheme.
The project was delivered early and on budget. An existing Victorian tunnel and buttress wall was retained and strengthened to allow future development.

The new Priscilla Bacon Lodge is a £12.5M new state-of-the-art Hospice building in Norfolk, replacing Priscilla Bacon Hospice’s previous outdated facilities. A charity funded project, the new Hospice building is a culmination of the remarkable generosity of fundraisers and organisations from Norfolk and beyond, and support from an army of volunteers.
The new building means more people will receive the best possible end-of-life care at the new Priscilla Bacon Lodge, as it will provide increased choice and access to the specific services they require when they need them.

Oxburgh Hall is a 15th century manor house owned and managed by the National Trust. Purcell were appointed Lead Designer and Architect for the ‘Raise the Roof’ project at Oxburgh Hall, following the unexpected collapse of a dormer window in August 2016.
The ambitious, £6m project – the biggest in the Grade I-listed hall’s history – has successfully seen repairs carried out to the roof, windows, chimneys, and medieval gatehouse façade, whilst remaining open to the public throughout the works. The restoration of Oxburgh Hall is a story of discovery, learning, ingenuity and determination, futureproofing the property for generations to come.

Southend-on-Sea City Council has committed to net zero by 2030 and a retrofit action plan is being rolled out. A key project within this plan is the innovative retrofit showhome which was opened in November 2023 to demonstrate the most cutting-edge sustainable housing technologies.
The housing team partnered with many teams across the Council, as well as the DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) funded Catchment to Coast project to undertake a holistic deep retrofit of a 1950s Semi-detached home.
These learnings will feed into the rest of the action plan and national policy on water management.
Southend-on-Sea City Council has committed to net zero by 2030 and a retrofit action plan is being rolled out.

A major new refurbishment and extension of the Clubhouse for the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club at Brancaster by Feilden+Mawson Architects. The Clubhouse located on a sliver of land between the beach and saltmarshes presented unique design and construction logistical challenges.
The project improved and modernised the existing Victorian clubhouse, unifying the form and creating accessibility for all whilst retaining the history and character of the club.
This project preserves this important heritage asset, protecting the building’s use, increasing its sustainability and resilience to climate change for the enjoyment of future generations of golf club members.

A residential-led, new mixed-use scheme for Westminster City Council in North Paddington, 300 Harrow Road is an estate regeneration project that addresses a severe need for new affordable housing by the council. Comprising of three new blocks that scale up to 16-storeys, the scheme delivers 112 genuinely affordable homes, a nursery, new community centre, canal-side café, and start-up office space.
The scheme, designed by architects Child Graddon Lewis and delivered by Willmott Dixon Construction, was changed mid-construction by the freshly elected Labour council from being 50% for private sale to 100% affordable rent – with the majority available at social rent.

The Old Curiosity Shop’s (OCS) rich legacy dates back to the early 17th century. Notably, the shop's association with Charles Dickens further adds to its allure. Its significance and charm led to preservation efforts, albeit many of them were ill-conceived. The London School of Economics bought the OCS in 2018, restoring it as part of the university campus extension.

The Children’s Day Treatment Centre at Evelina London Children’s Hospital is a new state-of-the-art facility inserted into a highly constrained sensitive site between the Victorian St Thomas’ Hospital and the contemporary Evelina London Children’s Hospital - a restriction that shaped the project, inspiring us to explore new innovations in healthcare design.
The role of the Centre is to reduce waiting times for families on the day of surgery, improve patient experience and increase capacity to treat more complex patients in the main children’s hospital. Opened in July 2023, the Centre will treat up to an additional 2,300 children per year.

Turner & Townsend was appointed in 2018 (at the end of RIBA Stage 3B). The team consisted of Turner & Townsend Cost Managers and Project Managers, as well as specialist design guardians to advise technically (ICA/Cundall) as well as specifically on the building's heritage (Fiona Raley Architecture).
Cooperation across the diversely skilled teams was a key success factor in the design management and future proof of the Grade II listed former Royal London Hospital. The team is proud to see the building removed from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register, preserving the community’s history for future generations.

Imagine a new building inspired by the ’15-minute neighbourhood’, providing affordable homes on a brownfield site with easy access to amenities - shops, restaurants, leisure – and some on-plot, like a nursery, and classrooms for higher education.
Imagine an adjacent park and trees, blending neatly with neighbouring homes, and a nursery garden inside its perimeter, providing residents, students, toddlers and teachers –with space to play and relax in. It sounds ideal but it describes a real place PTE designed for the London Borough of Waltham Forest: Juniper House, which unites new homes with a nursery and a university campus in Walthamstow.

St Mark's Church of England School is a game changer for the Southampton community. AtkinsRéalis, Morgan Sindall Construction, Architecture PLB and the rest of the team worked collaboratively with Southampton City Council (SCC) to deliver a brand new 1346-place all-through school - enabling families to save long bus rides by sending their children to a state-of-the-art establishment right on their doorstep.
However, it's not just functionally and in placemaking that this school has changed lives; the incredible outreach programmes during the build will see a social return of investment of £75m back into the local community throughout the project's lifecycle.

The team have achieved a delicate balance, authentically restoring the historic fabric whilst re-presenting the interior to suit its new civic purpose, working together since 2017 to deliver this exemplary heritage-led regeneration scheme.

Simultaneous repair of 15 historic rural agricultural buildings in Dartmoor National Park in a limited timescale, with limited funding and under strict conservation criteria.
The pilot project was a collaboration between national cultural and heritage bodies, government departments, five national parks, farm owners, conservation architects, specialist consultants and conservation contractors. The project identified vulnerable historic agricultural buildings which are rooted in the cultural identity of each national park, and were in danger of being lost to decay.
Funding was provided for masterplans and specialist conservation repair work to rescue them for continued use in an agricultural context with 80% funding.

Keynsham Recycling Hub is a large-scale (c.£35m construction value) state-of-the-art waste recycling facility produced for Bath & North East Council (B&NES Council).
The project encompasses both recycling facilities for household waste collected by the Council, as well as facilities such as a publicly accessible household waste drop off, a re-use shop, offices and an MOT/vehicle maintenance workshop. The project is special because it has solved a large part of a complex consolidation programme of Council waste services provisions (from four sites into one) and was procured successfully during Covid-19 via collaboration between the project team and contractor.

On top of that, it’s a delightful place to work, offering memberships and rentals in a fully accessible Grade II listed heritage building, framing dramatic views across St Ives harbour. Together, the Design Team worked tirelessly to overcome successive challenges during and after covid to deliver a beautifully restored building open to all.

Strathblane Community Development Trust (SCDT) embarked on a major project to create a new community library to replace the village’s library facility, a 124 sq metre dilapidated 40-year-old portacabin.
Despite its size, age and limited opening hours, Strathblane Library is one of the council’s busiest rural libraries. The new library is a striking modern building with advanced net zero carbon energy system – a partnership between Strathblane Community Development Trust (SCDT) and Stirling Council.

Fairburn Tower

Fairburn Tower was built around 1545 for Murdo Mackenzie and enlarged in the early 17th century, before being abandoned and falling in to disrepair. The tower sat as a ruin for over a hundred years and was on the Buildings at Risk register, until it was identified by the Landmark Trust as an opportunity to add to their portfolio of unique holiday homes around the United Kingdom.
The project saw the Category A listed tower transformed from a roofless ruin into high quality holiday accommodation, using appropriate traditional materials and craftsmanship whilst carefully integrating necessary modern services.

University of Strathclyde, The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS)
MGAC
The University of Strathclyde, National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) project is nominated by MGAC, a global boutique consultancy operating out of twelve offices across the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. MGAC was appointed as Cost Manager / Quantity Surveyor by the University and delivered services from RIBA Stage 2 through Stage 7.
MGAC demonstrated excellence on this project through robust financial management and cost control, resulting in the project being delivered in line with the £43M budget. Our efforts also secured a BREEAM Outstanding rating, an accolade that less than 1% of new non-domestic buildings achieve in the UK.
MGAC was appointed as Cost Manager / Quantity Surveyor by the University and delivered services from RIBA Stage 2 through Stage 7.

The design team, led by Hoskins Architects, was appointed in 2014 to undertake the exceptional challenge of carefully reworking the lower ground levels of Scottish National Galleries’ complex on Edinburgh’s world-famous Mound, below Playfair’s iconic Greek temple (the National).
The team began by undertaking careful research including extensive consultation with stakeholders to understand current limitations and future aspirations.
Numerous significant and unforeseeable challenges were overcome by the team throughout the delivery of the project by working collaboratively and openly with both client and contractor, in the end delivering a truly world class space in which to display Scotland’s national collection.

At Radius we are always looking at how we can bring innovative approaches to how we develop new homes and build strong communities. Working with Sean Dolans and the other organisations we have built a strong partnership approach, which has been able to deliver a huge amount, including 119 high quality homes and a first-class new sports and community facility. This project allowed a unique partnership approach which would go beyond the construction of houses or a sports facility. It delivered a high quality, integrated community project for wider community to use.
Templemore Baths, Belfast

The Project has achieved the successful restoration of Templemore Baths, a Grade B Listed building. The building is of significant architectural interest (one of only two Victorian baths remaining in the city and is the only remaining functioning Victorian bath in Ireland). Most of the original architectural detailing has been retained, alongside 80% salvage rate of materials. This project is unique as the building has been restored to its original purpose, with the transformation documented and showcased within the new interpretative space. All stakeholders involved ensured that the architectural, historic and social interest was captured and restored in equal measure.

The design and delivery of Queen’s Business School’s Student Hub was led by TODD Architects, working closely with WSP’s project management/cost consultancy teams.The brief was particularly demanding with requirement both to ensure flexibility in its accommodation to adapt to evolving teaching and learning pedagogies for its post-graduate students and to become an exemplar in sustainable building design. The site context was particularly challenging. The contemporary architectural solution acknowledges the neighbouring listed-building in its form and materiality, whilst also responding to the sensitive landscape, with the building carefully set into its sloping site; ensuring user-connectivity with the surrounding mature woodland.

St Comgall’s–Ionad Eileen Howell is a historic building in west Belfast with stunning Neo-Georgian brickwork and traditional slated roofs and holds immense local significance. The once derelict and dilapidated former school St Comgall's, owned by Falls Community Council, has undergone a remarkable transformation. The refurbishment and repair of the building has brought new life into the building, making it a valuable asset for the local community. With its added offices, café, and versatile spaces for events and exhibitions, the Grade B1-listed building on Divis Street has been meticulously refurbished resulting in a stunning example of first-class urban regeneration in Belfast.

Coalfields Regeneration Trust
CRT Hwb Cana was delivered by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust with support from its property arm, CRT Property. The project was designed around the needs of the Penywaun community in South Wales, one of the most deprived communities in the UK, with a high level of local consultation.
The finished building is home to the CRT Together programme which is delivered in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, which signposts people living with cancer into local services and the Smart Money Cymru community bank. It is a project which was delivered with the Penywaun community to address their local needs.
CRT Hwb Cana was designed around the needs of the Penywaun community in South Wales.
Penderyn Distillery & Visitor Centre, Hafod Copperworks

The Hafod Copperworks Distillery & Visitor Centre is an exemplar of restoration and preservation. The combination of two Grade II listed historical landmarks, once part of a pivotal hub in the copper industry, has been meticulously completed, showcasing a harmonious blend of heritage and modern functionality.
The restoration and contemporary connection were a true collaborative effort from all involved, enabling the integration of a new state-of-the-art distillery. The scheme’s transformative impact is acting as a catalyst for wider regeneration, and stands as a celebration of heritage conservation, promoting a cultural legacy and fostering a renewed sense of local pride.

Fitzalan High School

Fitzalan High School now provides state-of-the-art facilities, dedicated nurture and ALN provision and sixth form for 1,500 pupils. Among the first built to provide flexible and adaptable spaces to teach and learn the New Progressive Curriculum with 100 classrooms, and an 1,800-seat multi-function heart space, along with a swimming pool and sports pitches for public use.
Fitzalan exemplifies outstanding achievement in providing a facility that directly benefits the local community, addressing acute sufficiency issues in the secondary and special sectors, earning commendable feedback from the local community, and showcasing its commitment to diversity and inclusion throughout the project and beyond.

Barmouth Metallic works

Barmouth Viaduct is located on the Dovey Junction to Pwllheli line, in the town of Barmouth, situated within Gwynedd County Council. As well as the rail it also carries a public footpath and was originally constructed in 1867.
The scope was to undertake a like for like superstructure replacement of the Grade II* listed structure and painting and repairs to substructure caissons. The unique methodology was developed taking into account the specific challenges of the location whilst taking into consideration the strong tourist draw associated with Barmouth and the local area.
This was completed by Network Rail and Griffiths Contractors.

The Interchange: Wood Street House

The Interchange has been nominated by ISG and Rightacres.
As part of a wider redevelopment of Central Square in the heart of Cardiff, The Interchange: Wood Street House turned an under-utilised parcel of land into 318 much needed Build-to-Rent apartments.
The tight city centre location provided a challenging construction process which required industry leading practices to ensure safe delivery. The 25 storey project not only stands tall on the Cardiff skyline it reaches new heights in terms of quality, sustainability and social value.
