Men’s Mental Health Month is an annual November campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the mental health challenges faced by men.
For Men’s Mental Health Month this month, we asked Tim Smith, Chair of RICS Mental Health Network and Dale Hoskins AssocRICS, General Manager at Savills, why are positive male role models important in our industry?
Research suggests that around 40% of men won’t talk to anyone about their mental health. This can have devasting consequences; according to the Office for National Statistics, in the UK 74% of all suicides involve men. That is why having positive role models at all stages of a man’s life can help build high self-esteem and self-worth, build healthy coping mechanisms, inspire, motivate and help make positive life decisions.
As someone who lost my father when I was 15, he was my hero, and I found it difficult to find other positive male role models. As a father to two boys, I hope to be able to share the lessons I learned from my father with them.
As a gay male of colour, I believe that visible, positive role models in the property industry can inspire a broader sense of inclusion and belonging. Our industry thrives when it reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. By sharing our journeys and experiences, we can encourage the next generation to feel confident in bringing their authentic selves to work, knowing they have a place here. I strive to be a role model by leading with integrity, fostering respect, and encouraging others to break down barriers and build a more inclusive environment.
Mental health struggles are common, but for many men, recognising and addressing these challenges can feel particularly difficult. According to Man Up, suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. Men are less likely to seek help for issues like depression, anxiety, or stress, often due to societal expectations around masculinity. This stigma can make it harder for men to open up, leading to feelings of isolation, burnout, or even more serious outcomes like substance abuse or suicide.
Good mental health isn’t just about the absence of mental illness. It’s about feeling good emotionally, maintaining strong relationships, managing stress, and staying resilient during challenging times. Addressing mental health challenges early can help prevent more severe issues down the line and improve both work and personal life.
When mental health is neglected, it can affect every area of life – relationships, careers, physical health and overall quality of life. Taking proactive steps towards mental wellbeing should be seen as a strength, not a weakness.
